Herniated Disc

Herniated Dsc

In the case of a herniated disc, the disc nucleus emerges through the ruptured disc ring. If this gelatinous core shifts backwards into the spinal canal, the nerve root located there may be displaced. The affected person feels this pressure as pain in the nerve supply area. For example, there may be pain in the buttocks or calf (herniated disc in the lumbar spine) or pain or tingling in the arm or fingers (herniated disc in the cervical spine). Most herniated discs can be treated without surgery. As a rule, the symptoms are almost completely gone after 12 weeks at the latest. However, if there is no pain relief after several months despite good conservative therapy, microsurgical removal of the herniated disc can bring about rapid relief of symptoms.
